On NON-UNION
As promised, this post is about a non-union independent web series aptly named NON-UNION.
NON-UNION follows fictional Detroit actors, Will and Corey (played by real Detroit actors Alex Bozinovic and Brandon Bautista) as they navigate their way through making it in the Michigan film biz. And so far, they haven’t been particularly successful.
The pilot episode opens with the Will and Corey attending one of those scam actor’s seminars. If you have been in the biz for a while you probably no someone who is scamming people or got scammed early in your career. Definitely art imitating life.
Generally, I’m not a huge fan of shows that take place inside the industry but the fact that its set in Michigan and deals with topics as general as boners really makes it an easier pill to swallow. The stories aren’t all that original but they are entertaining and there are some surprising moments and clever lines. There are definitely moments that bring the funny! And I have a feeling that there are aspects of this show that every actor or writer or creative will be able to relate to. There were definitely moments that made me smile because I’ve been there. Like in “Episode 6: IMDb Pros.”

What could be improved on….
Visually, it would be nice to see some more camera movement. A stagnant camera doesn’t do much.
The sound isn’t perfect but it really isn’t too flat or erratic enough to be all that bothersome in most episodes. Though from episode to episode I did quite a bit of volume adjusting. Turning up the mic on wide shots might help some.
The episodes are short and don’t drag but I would love to see the pacing picked up a bit. Sometimes, the performances feel a bit sleepy. The earlier episodes that don’t include cuts really suffer the most.
And lastly, it says in the short description that they are “juggling full time jobs” but their non-acting work is not really included in the series. I would just omit that from the description all-together.
Verdict: I think that for two guys and a camera making a web series, NON-UNION is extremely enjoyable. Nice work, Brandon and Alex!
